ABOUT THE POEM

Imam al-Busiri

Imam Sharaf al-Din Muhammad al-Busiri (1213–1294 CE) was an Egyptian poet and Sufi scholar, a student of the great Imam Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari. Born in the village of Busir in Egypt, he became one of the most celebrated poets of the Islamic world.

The Qasida Burda was composed during a period of great trial. Imam Busiri suffered a paralytic stroke that left half his body immobile. In his vulnerability, he composed this ode as a spiritual supplication, pouring his love and longing for the Prophet ﷺ into every verse.

According to the account transmitted through generations, the Prophet ﷺ appeared to Imam Busiri in a blessed dream, wiped his hand over the afflicted side, and covered him with his mantle (burda). When Imam Busiri awoke, he found himself completely healed.

The Qasida Burda has since been recited in every corner of the world, from Masjid al-Nabawi in Madinah to the gatherings of scholars across seven centuries. Its 160 verses encompass themes of repentance, praise, the miracles of the Quran, the Night Journey, and intercession.
